From locked-out accounts to a measurable lead engine

Draft — not for publishing yet. Anonymized version. No ad spend, budget or dollar cost-per-lead figures (NUREV policy). Do not name the company, owner, domains, address or competitors. Swap in the company name only with written approval.

The challenge

Where they started

About 80% of the business came from referrals, and the website contributed very little. A former out-of-state web vendor controlled the domain, and the owner had lost access to the company’s Facebook page.

The old site was thin and full of errors, and painting was nearly invisible online — callers were often surprised to learn the company painted at all.

What we did

The plan

01

Took back control

We moved the business to a new domain it owns, set up branded email and consolidated its accounts.

02

Wrote the website in the owner’s own voice

Instead of asking a busy contractor to write copy, we sent a 30-question interview he answered by voice memo. Those answers became the website, built around what makes the business different: one crew from start to finish, 25 years of experience and a reputation built on referrals. Painting got its own pages alongside drywall.

03

Measured before spending

Form and phone-call tracking went live before any ads ran, so every dollar could be judged on cost per lead.

04

Split drywall and painting

Separate search campaigns let each service be optimized on its own. Drywall performed almost immediately. Painting got a focused rebuild with a tighter radius, cleaner search terms and seasonal pausing — not a bigger budget.

05

Built local visibility

Business Profile improvements, citations, review-request cards and a refreshed social presence.

The results

What changed

  • Drywall campaigns produced leads almost immediately once tracking was in place.
  • August–September averaged 1.6× more leads per month than July at about 38% lower cost per lead.
  • Painting cost per lead dropped about 67% in the first weeks after the rebuild.
  • Organic search clicks doubled quarter over quarter, with drywall searches reaching page one.
  • Google Business Profile calls rose 120% from the first to the third quarter of 2026, with a 5.0-star rating.
